Shanika: You up?

Steven: Barely. Everything okay?

Shanika: A lil drunk.

Steven: Need a ride?

Shanika: No, but I could use your help

Steven: Stop by the house tomorrow. We’ll talk.

Shanika: Okay. Thanks.

The conversation ended too soon, but he’d answered quickly, which I told myself was a good sign as I fell asleep.

I sat in my room alone, waiting for my test results to come back. Any chance of being HIV positive was frightening, but my chances were high. After a drug fueled trip through South America that ended up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I’d thrown all caution to the wind. The details of the week I spent lusting through the country were still hazy. All I remembered clearly was the news about a possible infection.

As I looked out my bedroom window at the expansive backyard, I thought about Shanika. I loved the way she saw the world. A million women would die to marry me, but the woman I wanted was out of reach. Her sense of humor is what I loved the most. Her body was perfect, but her mind turned me on even more than her beautiful, ebony curves. Someone knocked on my bedroom door.

“Yes?” I called out.

The door opened. Kenneth, my butler, walked in.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Nothing, sir. I wanted to see if you needed anything. You’ve been in here all day.”

“I’m fine, thanks.” Kenneth started to shut the door. “Hold on a minute. Do you mind if I ask you a question?”

“Not at all.”

“Try to forget I’m your boss before you answer, okay? I want you to be honest.” Kenneth nodded his head. “Do you think I’m an asshole?”

“I can’t answer that.”

“What? Why not? I’ll write you a check for a hundred thousand right now if you give me an answer.”

“And that’s why you’re an asshole, sir.”

“I see. Do a lot of people see me this way?”

He frowned. “Do you want me to be honest?”

I nodded. “Yes, please. I can handle it.”

“Well, a lot of people think you’re a prick and an asshole, but it’s mostly when you’re…” He paused, searching for the perfect word.

“When I’m fucked up on drugs?”

“Yes, sir. You’re the best boss I’ve ever had, but I hear visitors and others talking about you all the time. Most of them think you’re wasting what you were given.”

“Thanks, Kenneth. I’ll have your check written out for you tonight.”

“That’s not necessary…”

“Nonsense,” I said, waving his concerns away with my arm. “Thanks again. I’ll call you if I need anything.”

“Very well, sir.”

Kenneth left the room. As soon as the door shut behind him, my cell phone rang. I walked over and glanced at the number. It was the clinic.
